Chess Club

The chess club is for both junior and senior boys and runs on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons throughout the year. There are a variety of fixtures against other local schools throughout the year and from 2016 a chess ladder will be introduced as well as an internal competition for junior boys and Senior Boys. There are well over 30 boys who attend chess regularly and all newcomers are welcome.

Programming Club

The Programming Club was introduced in 2015 providing learners with a platform to use different programming languages and improve coding ability. The learners currently use NetBeans (Java), Scratch and an online resource called Code.org.

In today’s technology-rich environment, programming can relate to any industry and can be a very useful tool. The learners are given a space to be creative and learn new skills.

The Programming club is available to all Graeme Scholars in the high school.

SCO (or SCA) - Students' Christian Organisation

At Graeme College we still generally refer to this structure by its former name - the Students' Christian Association (SCA). The SCA promotes good fun and fellowship in the context of living to worship Jesus Christ. The aim of the organisation is primarily to nurture the faith of Christian learners, but also to provide a space in which non-Christians can explore the Christian faith and ultimately be introduced to Jesus. Meetings take place during the school term on Friday evenings at 18:30, and usually begin with ice-breakers and other games, followed by a time of musical worship, and finally a Bible-based talk on a topical aspect of the Christian faith. These times of unity are always occasions for vibrant social engagement centered on the person of Jesus Christ.

As of 2014 the Graeme SCA has been involved in an initiative called “Unity”, run by the SUIS (Scripture Union Independent Schools). “Unity” aims to support SCA leaders (learners on the SCA leadership team) in their walk with the Lord, and to train them to minister effectively in their schools. Each term there are two unity meetings for SCA groups from Grahamstown schools - one training session for SCA leadership teams, and one combined worship event open to all SCA members (and others). These meetings are hosted by a different school each term.

Independent of the SCA, week-time prayer meetings are held at Graeme College during second break on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, open to all staff and learners. We believe that prayer is foundational to every aspect of life, and that God moves in answer to the heart-felt prayers of those who love him. We pray for individuals in need, for our school, for our city, for South Africa, for global concerns, and for anything else that we feel led to bring to God.

Please pray with us for revival at Graeme College. Our deep desire is for God’s kingdom to come here, his will to be done here, and his blessing to be poured out on our school.
